As I mentioned in last week’s post, I decided to crochet a hat, similar to the one above, for my cat Benji for this week’s project.

Materials:

I decided to use leftover yarn from the gingham tote bag I made last week, and opted for the light purple colour. I used a 5.0 mm crochet hook, and that’s all this project called for! If I decide to make another one, something cool would be to use multiple strands of different coloured yarn at the same time, and see what kind of effect that would create.

I figured that to make this hat I would basically need to crochet a big circle, and then make gaps on either side of the circle for Benji’s ears. I found this tutorial on YouTube, created by user Bag-O-Day Crochet, which was really helpful in showing me the proper measurements to create this hat. This only took about 30 minutes to make, so it is a really fun and quick project I can make if I ever have leftover yarn to spare!

The process was pretty straightforward, and my final result is shown below:

The two holes are for Benji’s ears, and the tassels are meant to tie underneath his chin!

As far as whether or not Benji will actually wear the hat or not, I think it’s safe to say he’s not the biggest fan. I managed to get it on him for about 5 seconds, just enough time to take a picture, and then he wriggled away and shook it off of his head. Although the hat won’t get a lot of use, it was still really fun to make, and it showed me the basics of crocheting a hat! I want to try to make one for myself at some point, so this was a great place to start.

Below is a picture of Benji wearing his hat, looking a little grumpy, but still adorable:

If you’re interested in crocheting a hat for your cat, but want to do something a little bit more complex, there are so many patterns for sale on Etsy! This pattern allows you to make a hat in the shape of other animals, which are adorable. I’ve attached a screenshot below as well! It just might be a good idea to make sure your cat likes wearing hats before you put in a lot of time and effort!

That’s all for this week’s project! Come back in a week to see what I’m going to make next ☺️
